Installation Notes
Tailgate strut replacement is one of the easier DIY jobs on a car — usually 10–15 minutes with no special tools. Open the tailgate fully and prop it securely before starting (a second person makes this much easier). Pop the spring clip on each ball socket, lift the old strut off, and clip the new one on in the same orientation. Always replace both as a pair — running a fresh strut against a worn one will kill the new one early.
Signs You Need New Struts
- Tailgate drops or sags on its own
- Slow, weak rise when you let go
- Particularly bad on cold mornings (gas pressure drops with temperature)
- Visible oil residue on the chrome shaft, or hissing when compressed
- Tailgate needs to be held open or propped with something

Gas struts arrived in good time. I approached my mechanic and made an appointment to fit them. However, after thinking about it, I searched on YouTube for guidance on how to fit them myself. It took me about 15 minutes. I phoned and cancelled my mechanic.
It would have been good to have the instructions included... don't you think?

These Peugeot rear tailgate struts move better than John Travolta swinging his paint tin in the opening sequence of Staying Alive. Occasionally on opening the tailgate you can almost swear that you can hear a BeeGee about to start to sing but they operate smoothly and silently.
